they say we owe a walmart account and we never had one... refused to send letter verifying the debt and they are rude.. just write them... they will stop calling... what a hassle... be sure you always get something in writing, we could be supporting terrorists for all we know and never give information to them.

Got a call from this number tonight. The caller ID came up as Portfolio Recovery Associates, a debt collector. This is the third number they have called me from. I don't know why their calling me. They always have an automated message whenever I answer saying to call such and such number back. Really what their doing is illegal. Under the FDCPA, they have 5 days from the first time they call to send something in writing; telling you how much the debt is, the original creditor, and the information you would need if you wanted to dispute the debt their trying to collect. I never received any such letter, they just started calling. Since I don't have an account number to reference, I will use my phone number and send a cease and desist letter. They picked on the wrong person to try and scam.

These guys are crude. Finally talked to a person with a name today. TODD. He is supposedly the manager and he says every call is recorded. I want to hear our call on tape. This guy is truly a new age thug. I wonder what this goon looks like. Anyway, what a enjoyment it has been lately to talk to them as they do us. All I ever asked for was some paperwork to be sent and 4 months later, still nothing but foul phone calls. Ask for Todd if you do call. He truly is the rudest.

Junk Debt Buyers - a growing slime pit There's a thriving industry of debt buyers who purchase very old and long-neglected debts for pennies on the dollar. They tack on fees and interest, and then try to collect the entire amount for the full amount plus interest.

They're junk debt buyers, and while their business isn't necessarily wrong or illegal, their practices often are. Problem is, a lot of debt buying firms are bottom-feeding scumbags who will resort to any sleazy tactic to make a buck, and have no respect for the law. Specifically the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which they regularly abuse, taking advantage of consumers' ignorance of their rights and timidity when confronted by tough collectors.

Their secret is, they purchase old, bad debts that the original creditor wrote off as un-collectable, and then pursue them years later when your credit score has come back up. See, they aren't stupid. If you're the same 420-credit score who never paid that bill for the last 10 years, they won't waste your time. But if you've gone on to purchase a home and clean up your act and you're now enjoying a 650-plus score, you're their prime target. These debtors, they (correctly) reason, are more likely to settle up these old debts now that they've achieved some financial security. Especially when the collector has illegally re-aged the account and brought the debtor's credit score crashing to earth. Your best bet is never to take a call from these people (Portfolio Recovery). They buy old dept that is past the SOL to collect in court. They then hound you with call to get you to pay up. If you answer they will get info out of you to help collect the dept, so stay off the phone. You can block there numbers, but they add more all the time, often showing only a random city and number on your caller ID.
